Hemorrhoids – Knowing What is Thrombosis

Thrombosis is known as blood clotting. A thrombosed hemorrhoid is a clotted hemorrhoid. It is severely painful resulting from severe swelling. In some cases, thrombosed hemorrhoids can be very dangerous. Complications could arise from this condition such as infection or a conjunction with another thrombosed hemorrhoid.

There are a lot of smaller blood vessels in a hemorrhoid. Once a big vessel has blood clot, smaller vessels which depend on the blood clot start to die. Smaller capillaries which bring blood to the area start to compensate but this may not be enough. Within days, if this condition is not addressed, the clot will start to rot and turn gangrenous. Tissue death happens, which is a very perfect medium for bacterial growth.

Another complication of a blood clot from a hemorrhoid is a condition known as thromboembolism. This condition happens when a blood clot is dislodged from its area and travels through the blood vessels and consequently lodges at the lungs or heart which could cause malfunctioning of the organs resulting to death. Pulmonary embolism is a condition when a blood clot lodges at the lungs, specifically at the alveoli.

When blood clot clogs the air exchange, there will be a decreased oxygenation. The whole body will then be deprived of oxygen due to the blockage. For the heart, myocardial infarction can happen. This is known as heart attack. Due to the blockage of the clot in the large vessel that supplies blood towards the heart, there will no longer be enough oxygen to keep the heart from functioning. These conditions are an emergency although rarely happen.

A thrombotic hemorrhoid constricts blood flow and thrombosis is aggravated with decreased blood flow. This is a vicious cycle. If this condition is not addressed right there and then, chances are you’ll be facing more problems in the future.
